GAIN EXPERIENCE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Spend a term working with the nation’s leading endangered species advocacy non-profit and help fight global warming, turn back political attacks on our nation’s environmental laws, and protect some of Earth’s most imperiled plants, animals, and habitat.

Interns assist with all aspects of the Center’s activities, from legal and scientific work to fundraising, outreach, and publications.  The Center offers a dynamic, flexible work environment with excellent mentoring opportunities.  Typically, positions are filled on a rolling basis and require a minimum three-month commitment, although shorter term or project-specific internships may be accommodated.   A small stipend may be available for qualified candidates, or alternatively, hourly work-study compensation for interns with confirmed federal work-study financial aid awards.  Internships are not limited to students; all interested qualified parties should apply.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

TUCSON

Media Database Assistant
8 to 12 hours per week

Description: To support our fundraising and communications efforts, the Center maintains a selective archive of graphically presented national media articles that discuss our work. In addition, the Center maintains a program-tracking database that summarizes actions in our various campaigns. The Media Database Assistant will conduct graphic layout of media articles, archive articles in a database, and summarize actions related to the Center’s many conservation campaigns in a program-tracking database. The position may also require researching articles online.

Specific duties: (1) Review media articles mentioning the Center for Biological Diversity and its work; identify key issues and enter appropriately into the media archive database; (2) Use Adobe InDesign templates to create graphic “paste-up” layouts of selected media articles; (3) Convert InDesign files to .pdf documents, and upload to media archive database; (4) Assist with other administrative tasks as needed to assist development and/or publications staff.

Qualifications:  Reliability, strong computer skills, strong attention to detail, and excellent reading comprehension all are musts. Some layout/graphic experience and familiarity with specific programs is a plus, but not necessary as long as the applicant has a demonstrated aptitude for learning new software. Programs to be used are Adobe InDesign, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Sharepoint, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.

Mexican Gray Wolf Campaign
40 hours per week
Requires extensive travel throughout Arizona and New Mexico

Description: Facilitate communication in public outreach campaign to reform the Mexican gray wolf recovery program and extricate this highly imperiled species from livestock industry supported governmental persecution.

Duties: (1) Organize and staff letter writing tables at Center booths at fairs and festivals in Arizona and New Mexico; (2) Organize public outreach events; (3) Investigate public lands in areas of wolf-livestock conflict to document violations of grazing standards; (4) Perform data entry and other office work.

Qualifications: Excellent verbal and writing skills; basic computer literacy; ability to operate independently; time flexibility for travel; ability to hike and camp in primitive settings; photographic skills; common sense.

SAN FRANCISCO

Legal Internship
Full-time (summer); part-time (semester)
Located in our San Francisco office

Description: Legal interns will assist with the preparation of litigation aimed at protecting imperiled species and habitat. The San Francisco office is a hub of legal activity with several attorneys working on cutting edge environmental law issues. Interns are likely to work on projects concerning ocean protection, climate change, public lands, and urban wildlands. We are seeking full-time summer interns and part-time semester interns.

Duties: Legal interns will conduct legal research and writing. Depending on current needs, interns will prepare legal memos, assist with brief writing, prepare filings, investigate new cases, and draft official policy comments. On occasion, interns will have opportunities to observe court arguments or attend agency hearings.

Qualifications: Creative, motivated, and good-humored law students are encouraged to apply. Internship requires strong legal research and writing skills. Background in environmental or biological studies or related experience preferred. Students with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Outreach Internship
Part time in San Francisco, California

General position overview: The Outreach Intern will work with San Francisco staff to identify opportunities to educate and interact with people in the Bay Area. The position is part time, for approximately 10 hours per week. Federal work study funds or a small stipend are available.

Duties: The Outreach Intern will study and become familiar with Center campaigns and projects, represent the Center at tabling events, recruit volunteers and members to the Center, and identify membership expansion opportunities.

Qualifications: Creative, motivated, and good-humored graduate students are encouraged to apply. A successful applicant will be self-motivated, have strong analytic skills, and should enjoy talking to strangers. A Background in nonprofit management or marketing IS preferred. Students with diverse backgrounds or federal work study eligibility are encouraged to apply.

Conservation Biology Internship
Full-time for three months

Description: Review the status and management of imperiled species.

Duties: Compile information on imperiled species from existing research and management documents.

Qualifications: Technical writing skills, basic knowledge of conservation biology, database competency.
